AFN Includes Favour Ashe in World Relays Squad Amid Qatar Switch Rumours

    Published on

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has named Favour Ashe in a 24-man squad for the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana on 2 and 3 May, even as uncertainty lingers over his international future.

The squad was released on Tuesday after Nigeria met the 13 April entry deadline, with the federation targeting participation in all six relay events.

Naija News reports that Ashe’s selection comes weeks after reports claimed the 23-year-old intended to switch allegiance to Qatar. However, World Athletics said no formal nationality transfer request has been submitted by the sprinter or any Nigerian athlete, according to Punch.

Under World Athletics rules, any change of nationality carries a mandatory three-year waiting period before an athlete can represent a new country. Ashe, who has a personal best of 9.94 seconds in the 100m, therefore remains eligible for Nigeria.

The men’s 4x100m relay pool includes Ashe, Olympic finalist Enoch Adegoke, James Emmanuel, Chidera Ezeakor and Tejiri Godwin.

For the men’s 4x400m, Nigeria listed Ezekiel Azukwo, Gafari Badmus, Victor Ime, Samson Nathaniel, Emmanuel Ojeli and Chidi Okezie.

In the women’s 4x100m squad are Jenifer Chukwuka, Rosemary Chukwuma, Miracle Ezechukwu, Rosemary Nwankwo, Maria Omokwe and 2026 world’s fastest woman Blessing Ogundiran.

The women’s 4x400m team features Anita Enaruna, Patience Okon-George, Toheebat Jimoh, Taiwo Kudoro, Jecinta Lawrence and Esther Okon.

Nigeria’s mixed 4x100m relay pool includes Adegoke, Chukwuma, Emmanuel, Ezeakor, Ezechukwu and Ogundiran, while the mixed 4x400m team lists Sekiru Adeyemi, Enaruna, Okon-George, Jimoh, Ojeli and Okezie.

Nigeria qualified for the men’s 4x400m, women’s 4x400m and mixed 4x100m before the deadline but has entered all six events. Final confirmation is expected when World Athletics publishes the full entry list in the coming days.
