A retired Judge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Hon. Justice Mwada Balami, has urged the Federal Government to abolish the boarding school system in Nigeria for the safety of students.
Balami, who stated this in Abuja while speaking on the nation’s insecurity, said that if boarding schools are converted to day schools, kidnapping of schoolchildren would reduce drastically.
He tasked governments at all levels to work with security agencies to tackle the security challenges affecting schools nationwide, even as he appealed for the provision of sophisticated weapons to enable security personnel confront bandits more effectively.
He also called on school authorities and teachers to monitor suspicious movements within school premises, stressing that security personnel in schools must remain vigilant.
Commenting on the continuous killings of innocent Nigerians by bandits, Balami expressed dismay at the manner in which Muslims were being massacred across the country.
His words: “I am a Christian, but I know vividly that the number of Muslims being killed in Nigeria is more than Christians. So, the Christians should stop personalising the issue with religious sentiment.”
He accused the government of failing to end the security threats faced by Nigerians for so long and urged authorities to take action to halt the killings of citizens.
The ex-judge advised Nigerians to provide relevant information to security personnel that could lead to the arrest of criminals or Boko Haram members in the society.
