Rangers demand NPFL action after fans attack players in Maiduguri

Rangers International FC have condemned the unsporting behaviour that marred their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 11 fixture against El-Kanemi Warriors in Maiduguri on Sunday.

In an official statement released on Monday, the Enugu-based club said their players were subjected to hostile treatment, with objects repeatedly thrown at them during the tense encounter.

“Such conduct has no place in football. The safety of players, officials, and fans is paramount, and incidents like this undermine the values of fair play, respect, and unity that the Nigeria Premier Football League represents,” the club said.

Rangers urged the league authorities to conduct a full investigation and take decisive action to ensure the safety and integrity of the competition.

The Flying Antelopes, eight-time Nigerian champions, are now 13th on the NPFL table with 13 points from 10 matches. The team remain winless in their last two, both ending in goalless draws.

Following the incident, Rangers Technical Adviser Fidelis Ilechukwu voiced his frustration on his WhatsApp status, lamenting the team’s experience in Maiduguri.

“Why this kind of treatment? Why are we suffering like this? I can’t stop asking this question. Coming here as a coach or player is high risk. God please help us,” Ilechukwu wrote.
