The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Limited) has activated emergency response measures following an explosion on a gas pipeline in Aleto community, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The incident occurred on Thursday, October 15, 2026, on a pipeline operated by NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC), an NNPC subsidiary.
In a statement issued by Andy Odeh, Chief Corporate Communications Officer NNPC Limited on Friday, the company expressed concern over reports of injuries and damage to homes and businesses, assuring residents that protecting lives and preventing further harm remained its immediate priorities.
NNPC said NGIC had isolated the affected pipeline segment and was working with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), security agencies and other stakeholders to coordinate emergency response efforts.
The company added that it was engaging community leaders to identify the immediate needs of affected residents and coordinate appropriate support.
While the cause of the explosion remains unknown, NNPC said investigations were underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and assess its impact on people, property and the environment.
It also disclosed that relevant operational records, including previous reports and actions taken, would be reviewed to help determine the cause and identify necessary corrective measures.
NNPC urged residents and members of the public to keep away from the affected area and obey safety instructions from emergency responders and relevant authorities.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to host community safety, environmental protection and responsible operation of its facilities, promising to provide further updates as verified information becomes available.
