The much publicised meeting of the representatives of the Federal government and the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has ended without positive news for the teaming Nigerian parents who have their children in the Nigerian public UniversitiesUniversity lecturers have been on strike for more than 6 months over demands that the federal government fulfill its 2009 agreement with the union. Federal government was representated at the meeting by the Professor Nimi Briggs’ led committeeThe meeting was said to have ended without resolving any of the contending issues according to a source close to the meetingThe source stated that the Federal government committee didn’t come up with any new ideas but was only pleading with the striking University lecturers to suspend the strike and return to the classroom while their concerns will be addressed in the 2023 national budget.According to the sources, the said meeting started at about 12pm and lasted for three hours without yielding any positive result to warrant the call-off or suspension of the strike which started on February 14, 2022.On March 14, 2022, ASUU extended the strike for 8-weeks to enable the federal government to address all the concerns presented to it by ASUU.At the expiration of the 8-week extension, ASUU again on May 9th, 2022, extended the strike by twelve weeks.  These extensions were ongoing amidst President Mohammed Buhari’s directive to the Minister of Education Mallam Adamu Adamu to resolve the issues with ASUU and report back to him within two weeks.Before embarking on a warning strike on February 14, 2022, ASUU had presented a number of demands to the Federal government which must be met before it can resume normal academic activities in the nation’s public universityASUU is demanding for improved welfare and revitalisation of public universities infrastructures/facilities for a conducive environment for learning as well as granting of academic autonomy to the public universities across the country.Another contentious issue between the Federal Government and ASUU is the non-payment of university revitalisation funds, which they said amounted to about N1.1 trillion. Federal Government officials had stated that it doesn’t have the money to pay the university revitalization fund citing low oil prices for the paucity of funds.Another key area of disagreement scrapping of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) and the implementation of the ASUU alternative payroll system, the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS)
