Fresh storm in opposition camps as two govs set to join APC

    Published on

Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad has stirred fresh political excitement with claims that two governors from opposition parties are on the verge of joining the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ahmad, who served under former President Muhammadu Buhari, revealed via his verified social media handle on Wednesday that the Governor of Taraba State and another governor from the North-West are expected to formally declare for the APC “in just a matter of days.”

His statement has intensified speculation about a growing wave of defections to the ruling party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Political observers say such movements could further consolidate the APC’s dominance as opposition parties continue to grapple with internal crises and dwindling influence.

Taraba State, currently led by Governor Agbu Kefas of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has recently drawn attention amid reports of increasing pressure from youth groups urging him to align with the ruling party.

Advocates argue that such a move could improve Taraba’s access to federal resources and infrastructure development.

While Governor Kefas has not publicly addressed the rumours, his frequent engagements with President Bola Tinubu at both public and private events have fueled talk of a possible defection.

Analysts suggest the motive may be driven more by strategic collaboration than political ambition, as the state continues to battle stalled federal projects and underdevelopment.

A Jalingo-based political commentator told our reporter that the political climate ahead of 2027 makes such alignments unsurprising. “If the governor is considering a switch, it may be a pragmatic decision to attract federal attention rather than a purely partisan calculation,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Concerned Taraba Youth Group has publicly urged the governor to join the APC, citing the long-standing neglect of projects like the Mambilla Hydro Power Project and the Zing–Jalingo–Wukari highway.

The group’s spokesperson, Shedrack Iremiya Gani, appealed to Kefas to “make history by aligning with President Tinubu to bring meaningful development to Taraba State.”

Sources within the APC, speaking under anonymity, confirmed that the party is anticipating several high-profile defections in the coming weeks as political realignments gain momentum across the northern region.
