Diddy’s mother Janice secures major win in court as RICO case is dismissed

    Published on

A $33 million RICO lawsuit filed against Janice Smalls Combs, the mother of music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs, has been dismissed in federal court.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, the case was thrown out without prejudice after the judge ruled that the claims brought by plaintiff Deon Best, also known as “D1,” were both time-barred and too vague to move forward.

Best, a former associate of Diddy, first filed the lawsuit in January 2025, accusing Janice Combs and her music publishing companies of orchestrating a scheme to defraud him of intellectual property rights, royalties, and publishing revenues. He alleged that Combs used her influence to seize control of works he claimed to have created, causing him significant financial and emotional harm.

Central to his complaint was the track Come with Me, featured on the 1998 Godzilla soundtrack. Best argued that he “controlled, owned, produced and/or created” the song, but alleged that Janice Combs unlawfully took control of it through fraud, forgery, and the concealment of records. He claimed he only discovered what he described as the “hijacking of artist publishing” in late 2023.

The lawsuit accused Combs of fraud and racketeering and sought $33 million in damages, attorney fees, and additional relief.

Earlier versions of the complaint had also named Diddy as a co-conspirator, but the court dismissed those claims on the grounds that Best failed to specify Diddy’s alleged role. He later filed an amended complaint omitting Diddy entirely.

In its September 19 ruling, the court found that Best’s claims fell outside the four-year statute of limitations and that his allegations lacked the factual specificity required to sustain charges of fraud. The order stated that Best would “take nothing” from the case, and that Janice Combs and the other defendants were entitled to recover their legal costs.

The dismissal marks the latest legal victory for the Combs family, which has faced a series of lawsuits and public scrutiny in recent years.
