NJI mourns late Chief Justice Uwais

    Published on

The Administrator, Management, and Staff of the National Judicial Institute (NJI) have expressed deep condolences to the Nigerian judiciary and the family of the late Hon. Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, former Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman of the NJI Board of Governors.

Justice Uwais, who passed away on Friday, June 6, 2025, served as the 9th Chief Justice of Nigeria from 1995 to 2006. During his tenure, he also chaired the NJI’s Board of Governors, where he championed transformative reforms in judicial training, administration of justice, and legal education.

Notably, Uwais was instrumental in establishing the National Judicial Council (NJC), which plays a pivotal role in judicial appointments, discipline, and safeguarding judicial independence.

Paying tribute, NJI’s Director of Studies, Gilbert Toh, said Uwais’ legacy “extends far beyond his judicial tenure.” In a statement signed by the NJI’s Head of Information & Public Relations, Kolade Umoru, Toh described Uwais as a “judicial icon, an erudite and astute judge of no mean repute,” whose unwavering commitment to justice and integrity inspired generations.

“Working under Your Lordship’s supervision was a defining experience that shaped my career,” Toh added. “Your mentorship and guidance helped me reach my full potential. I am forever grateful for the inspiration, knowledge, and experience gained under your tutelage.”

Toh ended his tribute with a prayer:
“May the angels of God accompany your soul and present you before Him. May perpetual light shine upon you, in Jesus Christ’s name. Amen.”

The NJI noted that Uwais’ tireless contributions to the rule of law and judicial reforms have left a lasting mark on Nigeria’s legal and political landscape.
