Vice President Kashim Shettima made this statement Monday evening at the New Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, when President Bola Tinubu met the House of Representatives’ leadership and members for Iftar, or the breaking of the Ramadan fast.
Shettima asked MPs to accept their responsibilities with humility and a shared desire to progress while speaking on behalf of the president.
Ultimately, history will evaluate us based on the bridges we were able to construct together rather than the quantity of personal conflicts we engaged in. We are assembled here tonight as allies in the admirable endeavor of nation-building, not as rivals in a struggle for dominance,” he stated.
In light of the importance of Ramadan, which falls during the Lenten season, the vice president urged serious reflection and a renewed dedication to Nigerian unity.
We are reminded to choose stability over conflict, cooperation over disagreement, and communication over division during this holy month of introspection and rebirth. “There are far more things that unite us as a country than things that separate us,” he said.
He described President Tinubu as a guy of vision and inclusivity and praised his leadership.
You have a leader in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who not only has your trust, but also has faith in you. He sees you as partners in our common goal of creating a better Nigeria, as custodians of our democracy, and as the voices of the people,” he said.
The Vice President also praised the House leadership and Speaker Abbas Tajudeen for promoting unity in the chamber.
Peace cannot exist without development, and development cannot exist without peace. The House’s unity is evidence of our shared determination to advance Nigeria,” he said.
Earlier, Abbas, the Speaker of the House, stated that everyone should take some time to contemplate during Ramadan.
One of the many things that the month of Ramadan involves, as we all know, is reflection: where have you been, where are you now, and where do you want to be? I think Nigeria needs this kind of introspection now more than ever,” he stated.
He stated that the government’s actions are for the benefit of the people and Nigeria as a whole, and he promised that every member of the House supports the president.
The Speaker gave ₦705,000,000 (seven hundred and five million naira) on behalf of the House, claiming that it was a six-month 50% salary deduction to help the President’s humanitarian efforts and the nation’s most vulnerable citizens.
