Manmohan Singh, the former Indian prime minister, died on Thursday at the age of 92. President Bola Tinubu has expressed his sorrow over his passing.

From 2004 to 2014, Singh was India’s prime minister.

Singh is a visionary leader who has made important contributions to Nigeria-India ties, according to a statement released Friday by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

Tinubu recalled how Singh oversaw the formation of the Strategic Partnership between Nigeria and India, which has since grown and fueled both nations’ political and economic growth.

Singh’s efforts to establish better collaboration in the areas of defense, trade, culture, education, health, science and technology, and ICT were also praised by him.

The Nigerian leader praised Singh’s contribution in guiding India’s economic reforms during difficult times around the world, while also thanking the Indian people for honoring the life and achievements of this selfless statesman and renowned economist.

“The Indian government and people are deeply saddened by the loss of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh,” said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In 2007, Prime Minister Singh made a historic official visit to Nigeria. Only a select few world leaders are granted the unique honor of speaking to a joint session of the National Assembly, which he received.

President Tinubu honors Dr. Singh’s commitment to advancing the connection between Nigeria and India, pointing out that his diplomatic endeavors continue to be a benchmark in the two countries’ history of bilateral ties.

The statement said, “He prays that the people of India will be inspired by the departed Prime Minister’s dedication to service.”
