Concerned about the escalating security issues in the country, the House of Representatives has directed the Clerk of the Green Chamber to compile its security-related resolutions for submission to the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA).

This decision came after the House considered a motion led by Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, representing Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency in Rivers State, along with 28 other members, during Wednesday’s plenary session.

Chinda expressed grave concerns about the deteriorating security situation over recent years, which has significantly affected the cost of living, particularly the price of food items. He highlighted that despite numerous resolutions by the House aimed at addressing these security challenges, there has been little to no implementation.

He pointed out that many Nigerians face severe food insecurity if the security situation is not promptly addressed. Chinda cited reports from the International Centre for Investigative Reporting, noting that over 380 Nigerians were kidnapped in January 2024, and projections from the Food and Agriculture Organisation indicate that over 26.5 million Nigerians could face food insecurity in 2024.

Chinda warned that if the House of Representatives fails to follow through on its resolutions with concrete actions, public confidence in the House would diminish, exacerbating the negative impacts of insecurity across all sectors of the economy.

After a voice vote on the motion, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the session, instructed the Clerk of the House to “compile all House Resolutions on security and forward the compilation to the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Committee on Legislative Compliance for action.”
