The Federal Government has appealed to labour unions not to obstruct its efforts to reform the power sector amidst ongoing protests against the recent electricity tariff increase.

The plea comes amid escalating tensions between the government and labour unions, with the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress staging protests nationwide against the hike in electricity tariffs.

Addressing State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council meeting, Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, acknowledged the right of labour unions to organize peaceful protests while emphasizing the government’s commitment to listening to their demands.

Adelabu assured that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is receptive to the concerns raised by the protesters and is dedicated to improving the power sector. He underscored the importance of collaboration between the government and labour unions for the sector’s success.

While acknowledging the protesters’ grievances, Adelabu highlighted that a significant portion of them are not directly affected by the tariff increase, as they still benefit from substantial government subsidies. He stressed the need to maintain focus on the sector’s transformation plan and urged against any disruptions to the reform agenda.

Emphasizing the necessity of sacrifice from all stakeholders, including the government, citizens, and the private sector, Adelabu emphasized the long-term benefits of the reforms. He warned against reverting to the low electricity generation levels experienced earlier in the year, emphasizing the positive impact of recent reforms on improving electricity supply.

Adelabu reiterated the government’s commitment to achieving a reliable, functional, cost-effective, and affordable electricity system in Nigeria, acknowledging that such a transformation cannot be achieved overnight but requires sustained efforts and cooperation from all stakeholders.
