In a troubling incident, the Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan has ordered the remand of Dupe Ademuyiwa, a 48-year-old hospital owner, on charges of murder for allegedly causing the death of a pregnant woman through an unlawful surgery.

The defendant, Ms. Dupe Ademuyiwa, resides in an unspecified location, and she was presented with a murder charge. The magistrate, Oluwabusayo Osho, refrained from allowing her to enter a plea, citing jurisdictional concerns. Instead, the magistrate deemed it necessary to seek advice from the Oyo State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The prosecutor, Insp Olalekan Adegbite, informed the court that the alleged incident occurred on February 23 and 24. According to Mr. Adegbite, Ms. Ademuyiwa, who is the owner of a hospital in Koloko Olopometa, Ibadan, unlawfully carried out surgery on a pregnant woman named Shakirat Akinlade, aged 45, leading to her tragic demise.

The charge brought against Ms. Ademuyiwa is in violation of section 316 of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000, as outlined by the prosecutor. The court, considering the severity of the allegations, decided to remand Ms. Ademuyiwa in the Agodi correctional facility in Ibadan until the DPP provides guidance on the case.

The magistrate adjourned the case until April 23 for mention, allowing time for the legal proceedings to unfold. This distressing incident adds to the growing concerns about medical malpractice and underscores the importance of thorough investigations to ensure justice for the victims of such unfortunate events.
