In a recent development, a Kano State Shari’a Court has issued an order for Murja Kunya, a prominent TikToker residing in Tishama Hotoro Quarters Kano, to undergo a mental evaluation at a government hospital. This decision comes in the midst of a trial where Kunya faces charges including inciting public disturbance, affiliation with a criminal gang, and criminal intimidation.
Presiding Judge Nura Yusuf-Ahmad made the ruling citing concerns over Kunya’s mental state, particularly suspecting influence from drugs based on her behavior during previous court appearances. The judge emphasized the importance of ensuring her well-being, directing the Hisbah board to provide regular updates on her condition for a period of three months.
According to prosecution counsel Aliyu Abideen, Kunya was apprehended by the Kano State Hisbah Board following numerous complaints from the public. Allegations against her include disturbing the peace of Tishama Hotoro Quarters Kano by associating with delinquent individuals at night and utilizing social media to incite unrest among residents. One of her viral TikTok videos purportedly claimed her leadership over the city’s sex workers.
Kunya, however, refutes the charges brought against her.
The offenses mentioned fall under sections 341, 275, and 227 of the Kano State Shari’a Law. The court has adjourned the hearing until May, awaiting the results of Kunya’s mental evaluation.
