The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Dr. Solomon Arase, has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to Nigeria and his determination to fight against cultism and banditry. In response to allegations of his involvement in police transfers and dismissing officers from his own village, Dr. Arase strongly denied these claims, dismissing them as baseless and unfounded.
In a statement issued by Ikechukwu Ani, the Head of Press and Public Relations at the Police Service Commission, the reports from an online publication suggesting Dr. Arase’s orchestration of officer transfers in exchange for money from the Edo State Governor were refuted. The PSC Chairman clarified that the ongoing reorganization within the Nigeria Police Force involved routine transfers aimed at improving effectiveness and professionalism. The reorganization initially focuses on states such as Edo, Delta, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom, with the goal of enhancing efficiency and accountability.
Dr. Arase, who previously served as the Inspector General of Police, emphasized his dedication to a police force that prioritizes protecting lives and properties, upholds the rule of law, and combats crime nationwide. He made it clear that he cannot be influenced by regional interests and is committed to fighting crime wherever it occurs, whether in his village or elsewhere.
The statement also highlighted a letter written by Dr. Arase to the Governor of Edo State and the Inspector General of Police in December, expressing concern about the escalating cult-related violence in the state. He criticized the judiciary for its failure to effectively prosecute these cases, allowing criminals to freely spread fear among the people. During his tenure as Inspector General of Police, Dr. Arase took decisive action against cult leaders, resulting in their arrest and subsequent court charges. However, he expressed disappointment that some of these individuals were released after his retirement.
Since the outbreak of gang violence in November of the previous year, Edo state has witnessed the loss of nearly 30 lives. Dr. Arase reiterated his zero-tolerance policy towards violent crimes and highlighted the successful implementation of intelligence policing strategies during his tenure. He pledged to continue his efforts to restore peace and safety in Nigeria.
