The issue of the Kano emirates, particularly the split and dethronement carried out by the former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, seems to be a matter of ongoing political and social discussion. Sen. Rabi’u Kwankwaso, the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, has expressed his intent to revisit the matter. Kwankwaso, in an interview with select radio stations in Kano, emphasized that the issue will be looked into, and decisions will be made regarding whether to allow, demolish, correct, or take other actions concerning the emirates.
The former governor suggested that the initial actions, particularly the split and dethronement, were not done in good faith and were driven by questionable intentions. He implied that there might be a need to rectify what he sees as a problematic decision.
After the Supreme Court validated the victory of Abba Kabir Yusuf, there were increased calls for the reinstatement of the former Kano Emir, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II. However, there seems to be opposing views within the political landscape, as a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano, Alhajj Alhassan Yaryasa, advised Governor Yusuf against attempting to sack the five Emirs in the state.
Yaryasa’s advice is rooted in the concern for peace, suggesting that any attempt to dissolve the Emirates might lead to resistance, particularly from the people of the Emirates. The political and social dynamics surrounding this issue indicate that it remains a sensitive and potentially contentious matter in Kano.
