Justice Joy Unwana, a judge in Akwa Ibom, and her driver, Idorinyin Ekanem, have been released by their captors after being held for five days. The abduction occurred on December 18, 2023, following a court session, during which Justice Unwana’s police orderly lost his life.

The Nigerian Bar Association, especially in Oron where Justice Unwana serves, staged protests and suspended court activities in response to the kidnapping.

The State Commissioner for Information, Ini Ememobong, confirmed their release, and Governor Umo Eno expressed relief, emphasizing the government’s commitment to justice.

The official statement reads, “The Judge of the Akwa Ibom State Judiciary, Justice Joy Unwana, who was abducted Monday night has regained her freedom. Receiving the freed judge at the Government House Uyo, the Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, thanked God for her safe release while appreciating security agencies for their swift response and commitment to duty.”

Governor Umo Eno reassured citizens that the state would not be a sanctuary for criminals under his administration and urged security operatives to intensify surveillance.

The statement also acknowledged the Ministry of Internal Security for their strategic coordination and use of local intelligence in addressing security concerns.

In her response, Justice Unwana expressed gratitude to the governor for his concern and efforts in securing her release. She recounted the harrowing experience during her captivity, offering prayers that no one else should endure such a terrible ordeal.
