Governor Oluseyi Makinde has emphasized the importance of statistics for evidence-based planning and decision-making at the 2nd bi-annual meeting of the National Consultative Committee on Statistics (NCCS).

In an address at the 2nd bi-annual meeting of the National Consultative Committee on Statistics (NCCS) held at Kakanfo Inn, Ibadan on Tuesday. The meeting aimed to review statistical activities and harmonize methodology for data production in the National Statistical System (NSS).

In his address, Governor Makinde expressed his pleasure and honor to be present at the meeting, which focused on the theme of “Data Accessibility and Dissemination at Sub-national Level.” He emphasized the importance of comprehensive, accurate, reliable, and timely statistics for evidence-based planning, decision-making, and policy formulation at the sub-national level.

Governor Makinde highlighted that the Oyo State Government recognizes the significance of good statistical information in achieving the State Development Plan (SDP) for 2040 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030. He emphasized the administration’s commitment to using data, science, and logic to make informed decisions that positively impact the people of Oyo State.

The Governor reminded attendees of the Roadmap for Accelerated Development 2019-2023, known as “OMITUNTUN 1.0,” which outlines the government’s commitment to transforming the socio-economic system in Oyo State. The roadmap aims to improve the quality of education, increase access to healthcare services, reduce poverty levels, enhance security, boost revenue generation, and provide basic infrastructure.

Governor Makinde also shared the positive outcomes achieved by the State Government based on the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) Reports of 2016/17 and 2021 released by the National Bureau of Statistics. These outcomes include a reduction in the percentage of out-of-school children, reduced under-five mortality rates, increased access to skilled health personnel during childbirth, and improved safety perceptions in neighborhoods.

The Governor attributed these achievements to investments made in recruiting health personnel, renovating primary healthcare centers, recruiting teachers, and reconstructing schools. He also highlighted the impact of the Light Up Oyo Project and the establishment of Oyo Amotekun, which have improved security in the state. Additionally, road construction projects and the establishment of Farm Estates have positively impacted the state’s economy.

Governor Makinde took the opportunity to announce that the Oyo State Government has consistently paid salaries to civil servants and pensioners on or before the 25th of every month since May 2019. He also shared the recent approval and payment of wage awards, making Oyo State the first in the federation to provide an additional N25,000 to civil servants and N15,000 to pensioners from October 2023.

Looking ahead, Governor Makinde outlined the government’s plans to focus on Infrastructure Development and Agribusiness under the Oyo State Roadmap to Sustainable Development 2023-2027, known as “Omituntun 2.0.” The roadmap aims to accommodate two additional sectors: Tourism and Solid Mineral exploitation, facilitated by the rule of law. The Governor expressed the administration’s commitment to making Oyo State a desirable place to live.

Governor Makinde commended the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and the Statistician-General of the Federation for hosting the meeting in Ibadan.
