    Lagos Police Advise Driver Using Google Maps to Face Legal Consequences for Traffic Violation

    The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, has responded to a driver’s complaint about being arrested by the police for violating traffic rules while using Google Maps. The driver, Oyiga Michael, had explained that he was misled by the map, leading to a one-way violation. Hundeyin emphasized that law enforcement officers enforce existing laws but are not responsible for erecting road signs. He also warned against paying bribes, stating that fines should be settled in court. Michael, acknowledging the mistake, expressed hope for mercy and revealed his car was impounded.

    1. Traffic Violation Incident:A driver, Oyiga Michael, reported being arrested by the police in Lagos for a traffic violation while using Google Maps to find his way home.

    2. Driver’s Account: Michael explained that the police accused him of following a one-way route and threatened to deflate his tire. He clarified that the navigation app misled him, leading to the violation.

    3. Arrest and Impoundment: While Michael was released, his car was impounded at the Cele Police Station. The police allegedly demanded N30,000 for the release of the vehicle.

    4. Police Response:The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, asserted that police enforce laws but are not responsible for road signs. He advised the driver to face legal consequences and emphasized that paying a bribe is an offense.

    5. Legal Consequences: Hundeyin stressed that fines for traffic violations should be settled in court, and drivers should not engage in bribery.

    6. Driver’s Admission of Mistake: Michael acknowledged the mistake, expressing a desire for mercy. He posted an update on social media, thanking everyone for reaching out, stating he was fine, and sharing that his car remained at the police station.

    7. Hope for Resolution: Michael expressed hope for the return of his impounded car and mentioned being required to return to the police station on Monday.

    8. Public Awareness: The incident highlights the challenges drivers may face when relying solely on navigation apps and the importance of being aware of road signs and traffic regulations.

    9. Police’s Enforcement Role: The police clarified their role as law enforcement officers and emphasized the need for drivers to adhere to traffic laws, regardless of navigation app guidance.
