In a recent press statement, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2019 election, explained his decision not to step down for his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) counterpart, Atiku Abubakar. Obi, who previously served as Atiku’s running mate, cited his commitment to a new vision for Nigeria as the primary reason for his independent candidacy. Despite internal issues within the PDP, Obi opted to contest the 2023 presidential election under the LP banner, securing victories in 12 states and the Federal Capital Territory. He emphasized his campaign’s focus on building a new Nigeria, setting him apart from other candidates.
