The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Presidential Campaign Council has warned President Bola Tinubu against alleged plot to shift January 16, 2027 presidential election.
The council said President must face Nigerians at polls instead of seeking postponement over Ebola fears.
In statement on Wednesday by its Director of Strategic Communication, Phrank Shaibu, the council alleged plan to pressure the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to change date.
It claimed INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan could be summoned to Villa and instructed to shift the timetable.
”The election date belongs to Nigerians. It must not be rewritten behind closed doors at the Villa,” Shaibu said.
The council urged Tinubu to drop any such move and told the INEC Chairman to reject and publicize any Villa instruction.
It said Nigerians deserve a chance to assess Tinubu’s performance at ballot after economic hardship and rising prices.
While calling Ebola a serious public health concern, the council said the outbreak should be tackled with health measures, not an election shift without evidence.
It cited the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC Director-General’s reported position that there is currently no reason to postpone the election.
The council insisted any change to the timetable must be based on credible medical evidence, not political consideration.
It urged INEC, local observers and international monitors to scrutinise any proposal to alter date openly with published evidence.
It warned the Presidency against using a health emergency to avoid the electoral contest, stressing that it is Nigerians’ right to a credible poll.
