Staff of Obajana plant of the Dangote cement plc at the weekend trained some students of the host Community on Skills Development Workshop, Sustainability Awareness Campaign and Corporate philanthropy.

This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the public relations officer, Abubarkar Jibrin.

He said that sustainability Leader at the Obajana Plant, Dr. Eseosa Ighile, said this year’s Sustainability programme, themed “Sustainable Production and Consumption – The Dangote Way” was very impactful.

Dr. Ighile said the company has also aligned its Sustainability Framework to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of it drive to mitigate environmental and social challenges in Nigeria.

“We’ve executed various programs during Sustainability Week aligning with the SDGs, which included a Sustainability Awareness Campaign on conserving available resources, reducing waste and promoting sustainable living practices.

“We also embarked on a Community Waste Clean-Up Exercise, successfully clearing waste dumps around the Obajana community. Similarly, we organised a Skills Development Workshop for secondary school students from catchment communities, with the theme “waste to wealth,” she said.

On skill development, she said, students who were drawn from host communities learned skills to convert plastic waste into crafts and make healthy drinks to sustain their daily needs.

She said learning materials were shared in schools as part of community development projects, which aligns with SDG 4 on Quality Education.

According to her, some of the environmental achievements include cleaner surroundings after our community clean-up, a deeper understanding of biodiversity at company’s mining sites, and a focus on sustainable consumption and waste reduction.

“Our message is simple – sustainable living is not just a responsibility but a source of pride.

By making sustainable choices in our daily lives, we can collectively create a brighter, greener, and more prosperous future for everyone. We encourage every Nigerian to embrace sustainability for the well-being of our community, nation and generations,” she said.

In their reactions, some members of the communities described the Sustainability programme of the company as very impactful, saying the company is positively changing the physical and the social landscape of host communities.
