Reflecting on Nigeria’s Senate President Removal in 1999: Will the Supreme Court Uphold Justice in Today’s Democracy?

    Published on

On November 18, 1999, the first Senate President of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, Evans Enwerem was removed from office, after just 5 months, on allegations of:

    1. Falsification of his name and personal data.
    2. Perjury about his age and schools attended, when presenting his candidature for Senate to INEC.
    3. Concealing a past criminal conviction.

Our constitution is very clear about perjury, and falsification. The Supreme Court has the last chance to do what is right, and Save our democracy. But my Question Is, Would They?
