Tobi Amusan Regains Freedom as AIU’s Appeal Window Closes

The 30-day window for the Athletic Integrity Unit (AIU) to challenge World Athletics’ decision to lift Tobi Amusan’s provisional ban has expired. This means that the Nigerian athlete, who holds the world record in the 100 meters women’s hurdles, can now resume her career.

Amusan’s suspension was lifted just two days before the Budapest 2023 World Championships following a review by a three-member panel appointed by World Athletics. The AIU expressed disappointment with the verdict and had considered appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) before the deadline.

Brett Clothier, the head of AIU, had indicated the intention to appeal the decision, but now that the deadline has passed, Amusan is free to compete. She is currently in Oregon, participating in the prestigious Diamond League final.

It remains uncertain whether Amusan, originally from Ogun State, will pursue legal action against the AIU for the suspension that disrupted her preparation for the Budapest 2023 Championships, where she finished sixth in the 100m hurdles final.
