In a series of lengthy discussions held in Niamey, Niger’s capital, Tchiani, a representative of the junta, engaged with a delegation led by Bala Lau, the National Chairman of Jam’atul Izalatu Bida Waikamatu Sunnah. The visit by Islamic scholars, representing Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, was intended to mediate in the ongoing crisis.

Lau’s statement on Sunday revealed that the talks covered a range of issues, including the Economic Community of West African States’ (ECOWAS) demand for the reinstatement of democratically elected President Bazoum.

Tchiani expressed regret that the junta’s perspective had not been considered by ECOWAS before the issuance of ultimatums. He underlined the junta’s intention to address threats to both Niger Republic and Nigeria and stressed their openness to diplomacy in resolving the matter.

He stated, “Our doors are open to explore diplomacy and peace in resolving the matter,” acknowledging the junta’s objectives and apologizing for not paying sufficient attention to a previous delegation sent by President Tinubu. He attributed part of the escalating tensions to ECOWAS’ ultimatum.

Niger’s Prime Minister, Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine, appointed by the junta, confirmed the junta’s stance on dialogue, stating, “Yes, for sure. That was exactly what the leader of our country told them, he did not say he was not open to dialogue.” He expressed optimism about forthcoming discussions with ECOWAS, aiming to lift the imposed sanctions.

The prime minister criticized the ECOWAS sanctions as “an injustice,” asserting that they contradicted the bloc’s rules. He remained confident that dialogue would lead to the resolution of the sanctions and reiterated the junta’s commitment to peaceful crisis resolution.

As diplomatic efforts continue, the international community remains attentive to potential progress between the junta and ECOWAS, hoping for a resolution that would foster stability in the region.
