“I Am the Obong of Calabar” – Former Finance Minister Ani Asserts Position

Chief Anthony Ani, the former Minister of Finance during the military government of General Sani Abacha in Nigeria, has strongly affirmed that he holds the legitimate title of Obong of Calabar, dismissing any other claims to the title. Speaking from his palace near Governor Bassey Otu’s new office in Calabar, Ani received a visit from the Mbiabo Esin Ufot Ikot Offiong community of the Odukpani Local Government Area, led by Ambassador Asuquo Nyah, a former Nigerian envoy to Uganda.

Ani detailed the processes that led to his election by kingmakers, noting that his election occurred before a Supreme Court order for a fresh selection in January 2023. He highlighted that the legal battles against his selection over the past 15 years have consistently ruled in his favor, including the final judgment by the Supreme Court.

The former minister revealed that despite his cousin Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, the previous Obong, being qualified to participate in the selection process per the Supreme Court directive, Ekpo Okon chose not to adhere to the order. Ani contended that he had followed all traditional protocols and court directives, unequivocally asserting, “Whether the world likes it or not, I am the Obong-elect of Calabar.”

At 88 years old, Ani disclosed that his formal installation would take place soon after a presentation to the Cross River State Traditional Rulers’ Council on Friday.

Sources within the palace of the current Obong of Calabar, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu, noted that they are refraining from engaging with Ani and his group’s claims, though palace chieftains have convened to discuss his recent activities and statements. One source expressed disappointment that some individuals seem to be undermining the prestige of the Efik Stool for financial reasons.
