Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi says Nigeria must beat Rwanda on Saturday to keep their World Cup qualifying campaign alive.
Nigeria face the Amavubi at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo before travelling to Bloemfontein to meet South Africa next Tuesday.
The Super Eagles are fourth in Group C with seven points from six matches and cannot afford further slip-ups with only four games left to play.
“We are not looking at the game against South Africa yet, because the game against Rwanda is the most important one in our hands right now, and we can’t let it slip,” Ndidi told journalist Pooja.
“If we let it slip, it’s finished. If we let the Rwanda game slip, there’s nothing like rivalry in South Africa. We have to win the game against Rwanda first, then we focus on the game against South Africa.”
Ndidi has been capped 65 times for Nigeria. He featured in all three of the Super Eagles’ matches at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, which remains their last appearance at the tournament.
Nigeria missed out on the 2022 edition in Qatar after losing to Ghana in the play-offs.
He was also named in the squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast but missed the tournament through injury, with Alhassan Yusuf replacing him as Nigeria went on to finish as runners-up.
The 28-year-old left Leicester City this summer after more than eight years at the King Power Stadium.
During his time with the Foxes he won the FA Cup, Community Shield and helped secure promotion to the Premier League in 2023/24, before departing in a move worth around £8m.
