Zimbabwe coach, Tembo blames wastefulness for Nigeria loss

‎Zimbabwe coach, Kaitano Tembo, has attributed his team’s 2-0 defeat to Nigeria in the Unity Cup to poor finishing and bad decision-making at critical moments of the game.

‎The Warriors and the Super Eagles opened the tournament at The Valley on Tuesday in what turned out to be a far more competitive contest than the scoreline suggested.

‎Despite Éric Chelle fielding a largely experimental side packed with debutants, Nigeria still had too much quality when it mattered.

‎Nigeria took the lead as early as the sixth minute through debutant Femi Azeez before the Millwall winger added a second in the second half to seal the result.

‎Yet Zimbabwe were not without their moments — they finished the game with 54 per cent possession, eight shots to Nigeria’s four, and five corner kicks compared to Nigeria’s none. The numbers underlined a familiar story of opportunities spurned.

‎Tembo acknowledged his players had chances but admitted the Super Eagles were simply more clinical.

‎“We had our moments, and they had theirs. The difference is that they took advantage of their moments, and we failed to do so,” the coach said.

‎He pointed specifically to transition play as an area where Zimbabwe fell short.

“I thought they kept the ball a little better and longer than we did. We could have done better in those crucial stretches, especially on the transition where we needed to make better decisions and take proper care of the ball.

‎“That was the deciding factor. Our opponents capitalised on the chances they created to score, whereas we failed to take advantage of our own high-quality opportunities. Moving forward, we need to ensure we are much more lethal in the final third, so we will go back to the training ground and work on that,” he stated.

‎Zimbabwe will now drop into the third-place playoff, following the defeat, while Nigeria advance to the final.
