‘Work from home, reduce speed limit, cut air travel’ – IEA chief advises

The head of the International Energy Agency, IEA, Fatih Birol, has indicated that the ongoing energy crisis may necessitate the implementation of energy conservation strategies.

According to him, these conservative strategies may include the option of remote work for an extended period.

Birol mentioned that a series of recommendations, which advocate for increased remote work, the reduction of speed limits and a decrease in air travel to conserve fuel, are grounded in “years of experience.”

During his address to the national press club in Canberra, he noted that since the IEA published its report detailing these measures on Friday, several nations, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, have begun to embrace some of the proposed strategies.

However, he acknowledged that “governments have their own priorities.”

“The measures we announced last Friday are informed by our extensive experience,” he stated.

“We analyze what is effective and what is not, and there are practical examples to support this, such as the actions taken by European countries following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which significantly aided them in navigating these challenging times.

“Immediately after I announced these measures on Friday, we received feedback from numerous governments in Europe, as well as from this region, indicating that they have already implemented some of them,” he said.

The ongoing war between Iran the US and Israel has thrown the globe into energy crisis with Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, also known as petrol sold above N1300 per litre in Nigeria.

It has also led to the increase in transportation cost and rise in prices of other goods and services across the country.
