Wike withdraws from PDP reconciliation, accuses Makinde of betrayal

    Published on

The storm within the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has intensified as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has announced his withdrawal from all reconciliation efforts within the party, citing persistent betrayal by fellow party leaders, particularly Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State.

In a no-holds-barred statement on Sunday, Wike accused PDP stakeholders of political dishonesty and backstabbing, which he says have crippled efforts to stabilize the party since the 2023 general elections.

“The PDP is in free fall, lurching from one crisis to another due to deceit and mistrust among its leaders,” Wike declared.

He accused Makinde of breaking several agreements reached by the G5 Governors and other top members of the party during key meetings aimed at resolving the lingering crisis. According to Wike, a meeting in Lagos ended in confrontation, where he labeled Makinde “the architect of our problems.”

Although a temporary truce followed, Wike said efforts by former Senate President Bukola Saraki’s Reconciliation Committee were sabotaged almost immediately.

He revealed that despite an agreement to recognize Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s legitimate National Secretary and withdraw legal battles from Rivers State, Makinde and Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State moved to install Ude Okoye as Secretary via a “so-called” South-East leader’ meeting.

Wike added that Makinde also led a push to recognize the Deputy National Secretary as acting Secretary, a move that led to the botched zonal congress in Jos after INEC declined to participate due to procedural irregularities.

“I lay all these facts bare so the public can understand the extent of the betrayal,” Wike said, lamenting how those he helped rise politically have now turned against him.

The FCT Minister concluded with finality: “I am withdrawing from all previous agreements. I will fight on until justice prevails.”

His latest salvo is expected to deepen the PDP’s internal wounds, with party leaders yet to issue an official response.
