The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has officially dismissed rumors circulating on social media regarding the cancellation of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates.
In a statement Issued by the Public Affairs Department on Sunday, the Council labeled the claims as “spurious” and attributed them to “mischief-makers” seeking to sow confusion among students and stakeholders.
The controversy began with a press statement dated July 19, which falsely claimed that the Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with WAEC, had cancelled the exams due to widespread examination malpractice and the unauthorized dissemination of question papers. WAEC, however, assured the public that these reports did not originate from its office and emphasized that the examinations were conducted successfully nationwide.
Moyosola Adesina, the Acting Head of Public Affairs for WAEC, stated, “The WAEC Management would like to state unequivocally that the spurious press statement being circulated did not emanate from the Council.” She further confirmed that the marking of scripts for the examinations has recently concluded and that results are set to be released on or before August 4, 2025.
In a bid to promote transparency and maintain effective communication, WAEC urged the public to rely solely on information disseminated through its official and accredited media channels. The Council reiterated that all press releases are issued and signed by the Public Affairs Department on behalf of the Head of National Office.
WAEC also called on parents, candidates, and school authorities to remain calm and to disregard any unofficial announcements not supported by the Council’s verified platforms.
As the anticipation builds for the release of results, WAEC is committed to ensuring a smooth and transparent process for all candidates who participated in the examinations. The Council encourages stakeholders to stay informed through its official channels to avoid falling victim to misinformation.
