US government says Harvard may stop accepting international students

    Published on

Harvard University will not be able to accept international students if it does not comply with requests from the Trump administration to disclose data on certain visa holders, according to the US Department of Homeland Security, or DHS.

This is the most recent step taken by the government to target the school.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem also said in a statement Wednesday that two DHS grants to Harvard totaling more than $2.7 million had been terminated.

According to Noem, she sent a letter to Harvard asking for documents by April 30 on what she stated were the aggressive and unlawful actions of Harvard’s international student visa holders.

“And Harvard will no longer be able to enroll international students if it cannot confirm that it is fully compliant with its reporting requirements.” Noem said.

A Harvard representative claimed that the university was aware of Noem’s letter about grant cancellations and the examination of permits for international students.

The spokeswoman emphasized that the university will abide by the law and reaffirmed its earlier in the week declaration that it would not cede its independence or its constitutional rights.

Remember how, following a deadly October 2023 attack by Palestinian Hamas militants, the administration of President Donald Trump threatened to withhold federal funding to universities for pro-Palestinian campus demonstrations against Israel, a US ally, and its disastrous military campaign on Gaza?

Trump portrays the demonstrators as antisemitic, Hamas-supporting foreign policy dangers.

Protesters, including some Jewish organizations, claim that the Trump administration incorrectly associates their support for antisemitism and extremism with their support for Palestinian rights and criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Additionally, the Trump administration has revoked hundreds of visas nationwide and is working to deport some foreign demonstrators.
