Mathew Urhoghide (Edo) and Ayo Akinyelure (Ondo), both serving Senators of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have officially resigned from the party. The announcement was made during the plenary session on Wednesday by Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, who presided over the meeting.

In his resignation letter, Urhoghide explained that his decision was driven by the negative political atmosphere caused by the ongoing irreconcilable differences and conflicts within the PDP at both the national and state levels, particularly in Edo State.

He expressed that these disputes had reached an intensity that hindered his growth and ability to fulfill his democratic aspirations. Urhoghide acknowledged the PDP for providing him with the platform to serve as a two-term senator and thanked his colleagues for the valuable experiences and friendships gained during his tenure.

Akinyelure, in his separate letter, stated that his resignation would take effect on June 11. He formally informed his colleagues in the ninth Senate of the National Assembly that he was resigning from the PDP. Akinyelure expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunity to represent Ondo Central Senatorial District in the Senate and serve Nigeria during the ninth Assembly.

He mentioned that his decision coincided with the impending conclusion of the ninth Senate, and he intended to focus on other areas of personal and professional development where he could contribute to the betterment of Ondo State and Nigeria as a whole.

The resignations of Urhoghide and Akinyelure mark a significant change in their political affiliations and underscore the challenges within the PDP
