President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his government’s dedication to alleviating the challenges caused by the removal of fuel subsidy, a decision implemented about eight months ago. Speaking at the 54th convocation ceremonies of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Tinubu assured that despite the difficult decision, efforts are underway to ease the impact and improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

Represented by the Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamaam, Tinubu highlighted the importance of the fuel subsidy removal, emphasizing its intended benefits for the average Nigerian. He acknowledged the hardship faced by citizens but assured that the government is actively working to bring about positive outcomes soon.

In addition to discussing the subsidy removal, Tinubu underscored the significance of his administration’s commitment to quality and quantitative education at all levels. He affirmed the implementation of students’ loan policies for tertiary school students and a school feeding program for primary school students. Tinubu expressed confidence that these initiatives would contribute to achieving their intended goals.

Congratulating the 6,886 postgraduate students and 10,578 undergraduates, including 340 with First Class honors, Tinubu commended the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Folasade Ogunsola, and the entire university community for producing well-rounded graduates. He assured UNILAG of continued government support and investment in the university’s development.

Three honorary doctorate award recipients, including Prof Toyin Falola, emphasized the importance of contributing to the decolonization project in Nigeria and Africa. Prof Falola encouraged leveraging Africa’s resilience and rich values for socio-economic development. He also advocated for women’s leadership roles across various sectors.

The convocation, marked by the highest number of first-class graduates in the university’s history, celebrated 340 first-class undergraduates and 62 graduates from the autonomous Business School. UNILAG’s commitment to producing fit-for-purpose graduates and maintaining its global brand in research and community services was reaffirmed by Prof Folasade Ogunsola. Notable personalities in attendance included Pastor Tunde Bakare, the university chancellor Shehu Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanemi, and Dr. Chris Maiyaki, Acting Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
