The comprehensive palliatives promised by President Bola Tinubu to mitigate the impact of the removal of petrol subsidy might be subject to delays due to the sluggish progress of the Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) established for this purpose. The committee, formed on June 19 with an eight-week timeframe to fulfill its mandate, must submit its report to the government by August 18 to initiate the comprehensive package of palliatives for the Nigerian people.

Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State chairs the panel, which includes members like Governors Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, Charles Soludo of Anambra, Uba Sani of Kaduna, Hyacindu Alia of Benue, as well as representatives from Organised Labour and Civil Society Organisations.

However, a committee member has expressed concern that they are not progressing as swiftly as anticipated, and meeting the deadline might be challenging unless the government expedites the process. Mr. Festus Osifoh, representing the Trade Union Congress (TUC) on the committee, emphasized the need for urgency, stating that Nigerians are suffering and facing difficulties while awaiting relief measures.

The committee has formed technical subcommittees to address various aspects, including cash transfers, intervention funds, reduction of cost of governance, energy and power solutions, development of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as an alternative to Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), and refinery improvements. Additional subcommittees are working on education, health, and mass transit.

Governor Nasir Idris previously assured the public that the committee is dedicated to bringing relief to Nigerians and will produce positive outcomes soon.

As the nation eagerly awaits the implementation of the proposed measures, Nigerians are growing restless, demanding prompt action to alleviate their hardships. The committee members acknowledge the urgency and stress the importance of addressing the welfare of Nigerian workers and the general populace, especially the unemployed. They emphasize the need for affordable energy alternatives, like CNG, and the consideration of palliatives to improve living standards and reduce the cost of governance.

In light of the current circumstances, the committee appeals for patience, support, and cooperation from all Nigerians, promising to remain focused on achieving the goals set forth by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and delivering much-needed relief in a timely manner.
