Support for Governor Fubara: Former GDI Coordinators Shift Allegiance

Former Coordinators of the Grassroots Development Initiative (GDI), a political faction within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) across 12 local government areas in Rivers State, have declared their support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The coordinators, representing various localities, announced their decision to back Fubara during a solidarity visit led by the former coordinator of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Collins Onunwo, to the Government House in Port Harcourt.

Onunwo explained that their shift from GDI to the Simplified Movement was motivated by the desire to prioritize the interests of the Rivers people. He emphasized that having already supported and validated Fubara’s mandate through the Supreme Court, the GDI had no choice but to endorse the governor for continued success.

Speaking to the press, Onunwo highlighted GDI’s historical role in supporting Chief Nyesom Wike’s political journey, leading to his governorship in 2015 and subsequent re-election in 2019. However, the former coordinators clarified that their current decision to disassociate from GDI and align with the Simplified Movement was driven by their commitment to the people of Rivers State.

Onunwo asserted, “Our concern is that we voted for the PDP and Sir Siminalayi Fubara, and we must protect that mandate with all we have.” He urged those opposing the Chief of Staff, Government House, Dr. Edison Ehie, to reconsider their stance or face the consequences from Rivers youths, women, and elders.

Christian Abu, former Public Relations Officer of GDI, clarified that the ex-coordinators resigned to join the Simplified Movement, emphasizing that GDI had played a crucial role in the state’s electoral victories.

Despite reported tensions between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Chief Nyesom Wike, the governor asserted that his administration is focused on delivering on its mandate to meet the needs of the people and protect the state’s interests. Fubara maintained that his government is not engaged in conflicts but is dedicated to righteous governance and encouraging public participation in state affairs.
