Kenneth Omeruo, a defender for the Super Eagles, has conveyed the team’s unwavering commitment to securing maximum points as they resume the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in June.
Following friendly matches against Ghana and Mali in Marrakech, the Super Eagles departed Morocco on Wednesday, with most players returning to their European bases.
Despite a disappointing loss to Mali, on-field captain Omeruo reassured fans that the team remains resolute in their pursuit of victory as they prepare for the upcoming qualifiers.
Nigeria is set to face the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in Uyo and then take on Benin Republic away from home during the international window of June 3–11, marking Match Days 3 and 4 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.
“We went into the match against Mali determined to win, just as we did against Ghana. In the end, they took their chances, and we failed to take ours. That’s football. You just have to take the chances that come your way,” Omeruo stated.
With June fast approaching, Omeruo emphasized the team’s focus on the upcoming matches against South Africa and Benin Republic. He highlighted the significance of the World Cup opportunity, particularly for players who have yet to experience the tournament.
“Many players in the group have not played at the World Cup before, and they see this as a big opportunity to be there. We cannot afford to let ourselves and the nation down,” Omeruo added.
Nigeria currently holds the third spot in Group C with two points from two games. They share the same point tally with Lesotho and Zimbabwe, while table-toppers Rwanda lead with four points, followed closely by South Africa with three points. Benin is at the bottom of the table with one point.
The top finisher in each of the nine groups will secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with one of the best runners-up participating in the FIFA Play-off tournament.
The Africa Zone (CAF) qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which commenced on November 15, 2023, are scheduled to conclude in November 2025.
