Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has described sports as a powerful non-kinetic instrument for positively engaging youths, building character and instilling values that promote national unity and patriotism.
The governor made the statement at the weekend in Port Harcourt during the closing ceremony of the maiden Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Under-15 Boys Football Championship.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports, Emmanuel Ndah, Fubara said sporting competitions offer more than entertainment, noting that they teach discipline, resilience, teamwork and respect—qualities essential for national development.
“At a time when the nation faces security and social challenges, initiatives like this help steer young people towards productive paths,” he said.
Fubara commended the Armed Forces of Nigeria for championing youth development through sports, mentorship and education, adding that the Federal Government remains committed to providing a safe and prosperous environment for children to thrive.
Also speaking, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, represented by Rear Admiral Gedeon Kachi, said the tournament brought together teams from the South-South, Abia and Imo states to promote unity and cooperation.
He urged participants to uphold discipline and shun social vices, stressing that sports play a critical role in combating insecurity and youth involvement in drug abuse.
Earlier, the General Officer Commanding, 6 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Emmanuel Emekah, criticised Cross River State officials for fielding overaged players, describing the act as unacceptable and contrary to military discipline.
