Authorities of tertiary institutions in Nigeria have been called upon to take concrete steps to stem the incessant harassments and intimidations of female students in the academic environment.

A legal practitioner, Mrs. Toyin , Taiwo, made the call at a workshop, themed “sexual harassment and intimidation among staff and students of tertiary institutions”, organised by the Kwara State Polytechnic chapter of the Women in Technical Education and Development (WITED) in conjunction with the Students’ Union Government.

According to her, sexual harassment and intimidation within institutions of higher learning requires an urgent implementation of robust measures to combat the crime effectively and, therefore, advocated a stronger mechanism to prevent such incidents and provide support for victims.

For his part, the Senior Special Adviser to the Kwara State Governor on Community Development, Dr. Awwal Olalekan Olorungbebe, urged the people to obey religious injunctions by avoiding fornication and adultery.

Admonishing those engaging in the devilish act to desist and turn a new leaf, he noted that religion reserves punishment for such an ignoble act.

Dr. Olorungbebe also charged the Polytechnic authorities to ensure stiffer penalties for those caught in the act of sexual harassment and intimidation to serve as deterrent to others.
