Saudi Arabia pushes for Salah transfer in January window

    Published on

Saudi Arabia is prepared to do “whatever it can” to sign unsettled Liverpool star Mohamed Salah during the January transfer window, a source at the kingdom’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) told AFP on Tuesday.

“We follow Salah’s situation closely and believe there can be a move either by loan or by buying his contract,” the source said, noting that while there are no ongoing negotiations with Liverpool, talks could begin at the “right moment.”

Saudi clubs are eager to bring the Arab world’s most celebrated football star into the Saudi Pro League, joining the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Darwin Núñez, and N’Golo Kanté.

Although PIF owns majority stakes in Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr, Al-Ahli, and Al-Ittihad, the source emphasized that interest in Salah extends beyond PIF clubs—Al-Qadsiah, backed by Aramco, is also reportedly keen.

Salah is currently embroiled in tensions at Liverpool, stating after being benched in a 3-3 draw with Leeds that he felt “thrown under the bus” and had no relationship with manager Arne Slot. He was also left out of Liverpool’s Champions League squad against Inter Milan on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old Egyptian forward—who helped deliver two Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy—may be playing his final game for Liverpool in Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Brighton before heading to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Despite scoring 29 goals and providing 18 assists last season, Salah has struggled in Liverpool’s poor 2024–25 campaign, with only four goals in 13 league appearances.
“Salah is loved globally and will have massive impact on the Saudi League on and off the pitch,” the PIF source added.
