The House of Representatives has directed the Federal Government to immediately institute an independent investigation into the death of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Etimbuk Sunday, at the orientation camp in Enugu State.
The House also urged for stringent medical services and emergency response systems at all camps across Nigeria.
This followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance moved on Tuesday by Hon Idem Unyime, a lawmaker representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom State.
In his lead debate for the motion, the lawmaker expressed strong concern over the circumstances surrounding the youth corps member’s death which took place on October 11, 2026, following a reported medical emergency at the camp.
He, however, expressed reservations over media reports that the deceased’s body has been handed over to his family naked and with visible bruises even as he had requested for an impartial probe to establish all the circumstances that led to the untimely death of the late corps members to determine the condition in which his remains were released to his relatives.
To this end, lawmakers have mandated its Committees on Youth Development and Health Care Services along with the Police Affairs as well as Human Rights to properly investigate the incident and submit their findings within 4 weeks.
Consequently, the House also urged the Federal Ministries of Youth Development and Health along with Social Welfare and the NYSC Directorate to urgently strengthen healthcare standards and all medical facilities and emergency response protocols at orientation camps in Nigeria.
According to lawmakers, such proposed measures were all aimed at ensuring corps members receive prompt and adequate medical attention during all emergencies to prevent a recurrence of similar incidents at NYSC facilities across Nigeria.
