Renewed impeachment allegations: Benue Assembly extends ex-Speaker’s suspension to 9 months

    Published on

The Benue State House of Assembly has extended the suspension of its former Speaker, Aondona Dajoh, by an additional six months, bringing the total duration of his sanction to nine months.

Dajoh was initially suspended in August for three months after lawmakers accused him of participating in a failed attempt to impeach Governor Hyacinth Alia.

The latest decision follows fresh findings indicating that the former Speaker allegedly plotted to orchestrate another impeachment, targeting the current Speaker, Alfred Emberga, while still serving his initial suspension.

During Tuesday’s plenary, the House adopted the investigation report detailing Dajoh’s alleged continued involvement in activities described as “destabilising” and “injurious to the peace and integrity of the legislature.”

Lawmakers insisted that extending the suspension was necessary to protect the Assembly from internal sabotage and reinforce discipline among members.

Sources within the Assembly revealed that the probing committee presented new evidence suggesting Dajoh remained active in moves aimed at disrupting the House leadership structure.

The Assembly affirmed that the investigation is ongoing and warned that stiffer sanctions may follow if further violations are uncovered.

Efforts to get reaction from Dajoh before filing this report failed, but he had previously denied any wrongdoing, and described the allegations against him as baseless and unfounded.
