Reckless borrowing has Mortgaged Nigeria’s future – Ex-LP official

Former National Treasurer of the Labour Party, Oluchi Oparah, has strongly condemned the borrowing spree of the APC-led government, describing it as a “crippling legacy of debt” that threatens to mortgage the future of generations yet unborn.

In a strongly worded statement on Sunday, Oparah warned that Nigeria is being plunged into economic bondage, as reckless, consumption-driven loans continue to pile up with little to no impact on national productivity or sustainable development.

“The reckless borrowing by this APC government has left our nation with a crippling debt that even the next generation cannot repay,” she stated. “This fiscal irresponsibility threatens to push our country back into economic slavery, forcing many of our brightest minds to flee in search of greener pastures abroad.”

Oparah emphasized that borrowing should be a tool for growth, not a funnel for elite enrichment. She criticized the government’s penchant for securing loans with no clear economic impact, warning that such practices only deepen inequality and social frustration.

“Leaders must prioritize borrowing for productive ventures—investments that grow the economy, create jobs, and uplift communities—not for political showmanship or short-term consumption that benefits only a few,” she said.

She called for urgent reforms in public finance management and a shift toward accountable, people-centered governance.

“It’s time to break the dangerous habit of borrowing for personal or partisan gain. What Nigeria needs is responsible leadership that focuses on long-term prosperity—not quick fixes or empty promises,” Oparah said.

She urged Nigerians, especially the youth, to demand greater accountability and push for a new economic direction that guarantees shared prosperity and national dignity.

“We must stand together to reclaim our future and ensure that Nigeria’s wealth works for all, not just a privileged few,” she concluded.
