Despite government appeals, protests erupted in Niger State on July 29, 2024, as youths took to the streets to voice their frustration over Nigeria’s economic hardships.

The protesters marched through the streets on Monday, chanting slogans critical of the government. They carried placards with messages such as “Enough is Enough,” “Stop Anti-Masses Policies,” “We Are Not Slaves In Our Country,” “Hardship Is Unbearable,” and “Fuel Subsidy Must Be Back.”

Last week, Governor Mohammed Bago had attempted to avert the protest by offering various welfare packages. He introduced a N20,000 wage allowance for state and local government employees and announced the release of 50,000 metric tonnes of assorted grains at subsidized rates to help alleviate the economic strain.

Further details on the protest will be provided as they become available.
