2027: Reps to hold emergency sitting

    Published on

The House of Representatives has scheduled an emergency sitting for Tuesday, February 17, 2026, to deliberate on issues arising from the newly released 2027 general election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

In a statement by House spokesman, Akin Rotimi, the lower chamber described INEC’s announcement as carrying “constitutional and national significance,” particularly the decision to fix February 20, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections.

According to the statement, members were notified of the emergency session through an internal memorandum from the Speaker’s office.

Lawmakers are expected to focus on legislative issues connected to the timetable, reflecting the House’s resolve to respond swiftly to matters affecting Nigeria’s democratic process.

Rotimi said all related business would be treated with urgency, urging members to prioritize attendance given the importance of the deliberations.

INEC’s timetable also outlines schedules for party primaries between July and September 2026, as well as the commencement of continuous voter registration in April 2026.

The development comes amid ongoing conversations on possible amendments to the Electoral Act ahead of the 2027 general elections.
