In a gracious gesture, President Bola Tinubu has bestowed a series of commendations and rewards upon the Super Eagles of Nigeria, including the prestigious national award of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON), as well as flats in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and parcels of land.
This announcement was made during a reception held at the Council Chamber in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where President Tinubu warmly welcomed the players and officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Leading the delegation was Senator John Owan Enoh, the Minister of Sports Development.
The occasion celebrated the Super Eagles’ recent accomplishment of finishing as runners-up in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), hosted by Côte d’Ivoire. Attending the ceremony were all team members, adorned in their iconic green attire, alongside officials. Notably, Alex Iwobi, who faced cyber attacks following Nigeria’s loss in the AFCON final, was also present.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu lauded the team, coach, crew, and management for their unwavering dedication, perseverance, and sacrifices that propelled them to the finals of the tournament. He acknowledged the numerous challenges they surmounted with consistently improving performance.
President Tinubu urged Nigerians to maintain optimism, underscoring the significant victory achieved by the team in captivating the hearts of Africa and the world with their resilience, determination, and spirit on the field.
He emphasized, “Let this recent event not discourage us but instead, let it unify us and motivate us to strive harder. We are a resilient nation bound together by the green-white-green banner, driven by hope, duty, and unwavering love.”
Addressing the aspiring Nigerian youths showcasing their talents in communities and on football fields, Tinubu offered words of encouragement, urging them not to lose hope. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to realizing dreams and supporting their aspirations.
