Premier League Secures Record £6.7 Billion Domestic TV Deal

The Premier League announced a groundbreaking domestic television rights deal worth £6.7 billion ($8.45 billion) for a four-year term beginning in the 2025/26 season. This marks a significant increase from the current £5 billion deal covering a three-year cycle and involving the broadcasting of 200 matches per season.

Described as the “largest sports media rights deals ever concluded in the UK,” the agreements involve Sky Sports and TNT Sports retaining rights to broadcast live matches. Amazon, currently showing 20 matches per season, is not part of the upcoming cycle. Sky will broadcast a minimum of 215 live matches per season, while TNT will handle 52. BBC Sport will continue to showcase highlights through its Match of the Day program.

While the traditional Saturday afternoon blackout, aimed at preserving attendances in lower leagues, will remain, all matches not scheduled for 3:00 pm on Saturdays will be available for live screening—a significant change.

Although the Premier League highlighted a four percent increase in live rights value compared to the previous process, broadcasters will be paying less per game due to an increase in the number of matches shown each season.

Premier League’s Chief Executive, Richard Masters, commented on the outcome, stating, “It is testament to our clubs, players and managers who continue to deliver the world’s most competitive football in full stadiums, and to supporters, who create an unrivaled atmosphere every week.”

Masters added that Sky Sports and TNT Sports, as longstanding partners, consistently provide world-class coverage, contributing to record audiences and attendances in recent seasons.

This deal ensures financial stability for clubs across professional football until at least 2029. It is the first tender process since 2018, with the previous deal extended in 2021 for an extra three years due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Premier League’s financial advantage over European competitors remains intact, given the substantial domestic and international TV rights deals. International rights for the English top flight surpassed domestic rights’ value last year and are estimated to generate £5.3 billion between 2022 and 2025. In the Deloitte Football Money League, 11 out of the top 20 clubs were from the Premier League, with Manchester City leading as champions.
