Players advocate e-sports association in Akwa Ibom

Following the official recognition of Electronic Sports (E-sports) as a competitive discipline at national and international levels, professional E-sport players in Akwa Ibom State have called on the state’s Ministry of Sports to establish an Electronic Sports Association.
The appeal was made during a courtesy visit to the Honourable Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, at his office in Uyo. The team, led by Mr. KufreAbasi Ikott, emphasized the immense potential of E-sports to drive youth empowerment, technological engagement, and economic development in the state.
According to Mr. Ikott, the recent inclusion of E-sports as an exhibition event at the National Sports Festival reflects its growing acceptance. He recounted his experience representing Akwa Ibom and noted that several other states have already taken significant steps toward organizing and developing their E-sport infrastructure.
“In Akwa Ibom, we have many professional players who are actively participating in E-sports, and even more who are eager to get involved. Establishing an association will provide the necessary structure to support these talents and create pathways for participation in national and international tournaments,” Ikott said.
He further stressed that formalizing E-sports in the state would not only help develop digital skills among the youth but also position Akwa Ibom as a leader in a rapidly evolving global sports industry.
In his response, the Honourable Commissioner for Sports Elder Paul Bassey commended the players for their initiative and assured them of the ministry’s support. He revealed that efforts are already underway to reposition all sports associations in the state, including the integration of new and emerging disciplines such as E-sports.
“As a ministry, we are always exploring ways to engage our youth meaningfully. The global rise of Electronic Sports presents a timely opportunity, and we are committed to facilitating the establishment of an E-sport Association in Akwa Ibom,” said Elder Bassey.
He added that the ministry will work closely with stakeholders to align with the national E-sport calendar and ensure that Akwa Ibom youth can participate in recognized competitions and development programs.
“I’m confident that our tech-savvy youths will embrace this opportunity, hone their skills, and eventually represent the state and country on global stages,” he concluded.
The visit marks a significant step toward institutionalizing E-sports in Akwa Ibom and underscores a growing recognition of digital sports as a platform for innovation, career development, and social engagement.
