Prominent Nigerian leaders, including former presidential candidate Peter Obi and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, have expressed deep sorrow at the passing of Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, the Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives.

Onanuga, who represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State, passed away on January 15, 2025, after a brief illness. She was a second-term lawmaker from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Peter Obi, in his message of condolence, described Onanuga’s death as a significant loss to Nigeria, emphasizing her notable contributions to her constituency and her service in the legislature. Obi extended his heartfelt condolences to Onanuga’s family, friends, and colleagues in the National Assembly, praying for her eternal rest.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu expressed his shock at the loss, remembering Onanuga’s advocacy for inclusion and equality, particularly her passionate support for gender bills in the Green Chamber. Kalu referred to her as a dynamic and compassionate leader whose legacy would remain deeply etched in the hearts of all who knew her.

Both leaders sent their thoughts and prayers to Onanuga’s family, constituents, and the people of Ogun State during this difficult time.
