President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced that Nigerian security forces have eliminated more than 300 Boko Haram and bandit commanders. He made this declaration during a broadcast to commemorate Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary.

According to Tinubu, these security successes have restored peace to hundreds of communities in the northern regions, enabling thousands of displaced individuals to return home. He reiterated that the administration’s goal is to eradicate threats from Boko Haram, banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of violent extremism.

The President also underscored the potential economic benefits of restored peace, including increased food production and decreased food costs as farmers return to their lands.

In his address, Tinubu stated, “On the security front, I am happy to announce to you, my compatriots, that our administration is winning the war on terror and banditry. Our target is to eliminate all the threats of Boko Haram, banditry, kidnapping for ransom, and the scourge of all forms of violent extremism.”

He added, “Within one year, our government has eliminated Boko Haram and bandit commanders faster than ever. As of the last count, over 300 Boko Haram and bandit commanders have been eliminated by our gallant troops in the Northeast, Northwest, and some other parts of the country.”

Tinubu emphasized that restoring peace to troubled northern communities is crucial for allowing farmers to return to their lands, leading to an increase in food production and a decline in food prices. “I promise you, we shall not falter on this,” he said.

The President also addressed recent natural disasters, particularly flooding, and assured Nigerians of the federal government’s commitment to supporting affected communities. He mentioned the establishment of a Disaster Relief Fund and announced plans for integrity tests on all dams nationwide to prevent future disasters.

“At the last meeting of the Federal Executive Council, we approved a Disaster Relief Fund to mobilize private and public sector funds to help us respond faster to emergencies,” Tinubu stated. “Our government has also ordered integrity tests of all our dams in the country to avert future disasters.”
